UDHAMPUR | June 4: In a major embarrassment for the law enforcement fraternity, a Special Police Officer (SPO) posted at District Police Lines (DPL) Udhampur was arrested on charges of drug peddling after being found in possession of heroin-like contraband during a routine checking operation.

The accused, identified as Vishal Singh, a resident of Shakti Nagar, Udhampur, was intercepted by a patrolling team from Police Station Udhampur near Phangyal area on Wednesday. According to officials, Singh attempted to flee upon seeing the police party but was apprehended promptly by the alert personnel.

Police have launched a detailed investigation to ascertain the source and possible network involved in the illegal activity. The involvement of a serving SPO has raised serious concerns about internal accountability and the spread of narcotics even within security agencies.
